Each of Andreu Zaragoza’s illustrations come to life over a series of finely-tuned stages. His images are formed layer by layer from the initial inspiration and through the process of drawing that he has developed.

While Andreu does employ a collection of digitally added textures to his work, his way of working still retains many traditional techniques for drawing.

By working through penciling, inking, and colouring stages, Andreu is able to give his illustrations a lot of depth and a rich, hand-drawn quality.

He tells us more about these techniques and how he developed them.

“Attracted to drawing since I was a kid, my love for comic books and music artwork made me study graphic design.”

“After some years working in several studios, I decided to get back to my almost forgotten passion for pencils and brushes.”

“My work is a mix of traditional ink drawing and digital techniques with textures and vivid colors.

“I usually start sketching with pencil, and when the drawing is more or less defined, I ink it. Most of the time, I use brushes. I like to modulate the stroke and get an imperfect look.”

“It is also very relaxing to me, like some way of zen ritual!”

“Sometimes, I work with nibs, microns and markers too, and when I want to sketch or draw something quickly, Pentel brush pens are my best option.”

“In my work, there are a lot of textures that I create using watercolors, acrylic paint, taking photographs of dirty walls, wood, etc. or scanning wrinkled and old paper. After that, I mix it all and add color with Photoshop.”

“My illustrations normally take place somewhere between reality and the dreamworld, a way to express ideas, feelings and messages that challenge the audience to take part and make their own conclusions.”

“I also get a lot of inspiration from cinema, music and every place I travel to.”
